SVG to PNG and Favicon: Export Icons Without Losing the Layout
Preview and optimize SVG, choose a PNG size, generate favicon files and understand sanitization and viewBox-related differences.
SVG to PNG renders existing vector artwork onto a fixed pixel grid: preview the SVG, set an output width, then inspect the downloaded proportions and transparency. Blank or clipped output can come from the coordinate system or external fonts.
FormatOwl's SVG tools work with sanitized markup. Begin with a self-contained static SVG and keep the original source alongside every exported version.
Preview before converting
Open the SVG viewer, paste markup or choose a file, and compare the result with the original artwork. Scripts, animation and external resources are removed or blocked. A file that relies on them may render differently.
The viewBox describes the SVG's internal coordinate rectangle, while width and height describe its displayed dimensions. MDN's viewBox reference explains this relationship. Use the SVG markup editor when you need to inspect or adjust source settings; it is not a drawing canvas.
Pick an export for the destination
| Destination | Operation | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| App that accepts only raster images | SVG to PNG | Output dimensions and transparency |
| Browser tab or installed web app icon | Favicon generator | Legibility at small sizes |
| Smaller static SVG asset | SVG optimizer | Curves, thin strokes and removed content |
| Embedded image value | SVG data URL | Encoded value and receiving context |
For PNG export, choose a width appropriate to the destination. The tool derives height from the SVG dimensions or viewBox. Its width control supports 1–8,192 pixels, but a huge output is rarely useful for a small interface icon.
A PNG has a fixed pixel grid. Keep the SVG as your editable master if you expect to need other sizes later.
Export PNG and inspect transparency
- Open SVG to PNG and select a file or paste its markup.
- Set the output width and confirm that the derived proportions match the source.
- Process and inspect missing lettering, clipping or background changes.
- Download the PNG and view it against both a light and a dark background.
A white rectangle in the SVG does not automatically become transparent. External images, fonts or script-dependent content can also change under sanitization. If you only have a PNG and need editable paths, follow the PNG to SVG tracing guide; it performs the reverse kind of operation.
Generate a favicon set
- Start with simple, preferably square artwork.
- Enter the app name and theme color in the favicon generator.
- Generate the icon files and download them or the ZIP.
- Inspect the smallest images at actual size, especially the 16-pixel version.
- Add the selected files and manifest to your site's own asset setup.
The output includes PNG sizes, a multi-size ICO and a web manifest. Non-square artwork is fitted into square dimensions. Thin detail that works in a large logo can become unreadable in a tab icon, so use a simpler mark when needed.
Generation does not install these files into a website automatically. Confirm their paths in the site that will serve them.
Optimize after the layout is correct
The SVG optimizer offers numeric precision choices. Rounding can shorten markup, but it can also alter delicate curves or narrow gaps. Compare before and after at both small and large sizes.
If the optimized file is not smaller, keep the version that best meets the destination's requirements. “Optimized” is not proof that every visual or byte-size property improved.
Data URLs are a different packaging choice. The data-URL tool can use percent encoding or Base64, and decoding returns sanitized SVG markup. A data URL is not encryption and does not add privacy to an asset embedded in a public page.
Questions about SVG export
Why is the result blank or clipped?
Compare the sanitized preview, check that the viewBox covers the artwork and look for external dependencies. Keep the original and use the SVG markup editor to make corrections before exporting again.
Can I keep enlarging the exported PNG?
PNG has a fixed pixel grid. Export a larger version from the SVG master when needed instead of repeatedly enlarging the existing bitmap.
Key takeaways
- Confirm the sanitized preview before exporting.
- Use the intended output size, not the largest available size.
- Test favicons at actual small dimensions.
- Preserve the SVG master and review optimization visually.
Start in the SVG viewer, then export only after the preview matches what you need.
