How to Convert PNG to SVG: Trace Logos into Editable Paths

Trace a PNG into SVG paths in your browser. Choose colors and detail, inspect the result, and understand white backgrounds and tracing limits.

Converting PNG to an editable SVG requires tracing the pixels into paths. Renaming the file or placing the PNG inside an SVG wrapper does not create editable vector shapes. FormatOwl's Image to SVG tool traces PNG, JPG or WebP into colored SVG paths locally in your browser.

Start with a simple logo, icon or flat illustration with distinct edges. The result is an approximation of the source: gradients, photographs and tiny lettering can turn into many simplified shapes. Keep the original artwork for comparison.

Choose a source that can be traced clearly

An SVG is useful when you need editable shapes and scalable outlines. It does not automatically improve a blurry original, preserve live text or guarantee a smaller file. If you only need a PNG at a different size, use image resizing.

Trace PNG to SVG step by step

  1. Open Image to SVG and sign in for advanced trials or Pro.
  2. Select a PNG. Choose a clear logo or illustration for the first test.
  3. Set the number of colors. For a simple two-color mark, try a small palette and check whether important areas merge.
  4. Set the longest edge and the threshold for removing small shapes. Start with the defaults, then change one setting at a time.
  5. Process the image. Compare outlines, holes in letters, small details and the background with your original.
  6. Download the SVG when the preview is acceptable. Inspect it again in the editor or application that will use it.

The working longest edge supports 128–1024 px, with a default of 768 px. The color control supports 2–32 colors, defaulting to 16. Increasing the small-shape threshold can remove specks, but can also remove punctuation or important small details.

Check the exported paths

Use the SVG viewer to inspect the file, and the markup editor for source-level changes. The editor is not a visual drawing application. Zoom in on tight corners and compare the result at the small size where the logo will actually appear.

Transparent source pixels are composited onto white before tracing. A white background shape may therefore remain in the SVG. This tool does not promise a transparent cut-ready design, separate craft layers or compatibility with every cutting machine. Test the exported file in the destination software before relying on it for production.

If you later need a bitmap version, follow the SVG to PNG and favicon guide. That operation renders existing paths; it does not trace pixels.

Questions about PNG vectorization

Is this tool free?

Signed-in free accounts receive 20 nonexpiring welcome uses, then 3 monthly uses from the next UTC month. Monthly uses do not roll over. Only the first authorized advanced export of a task consumes a use; previews and failed processing do not. Pro users do not spend trials. Check plans and limits.

Will the text remain editable as text?

No. Lettering becomes traced shapes, not a recovered font or text object. For exact brand typography, use the original vector source when available.

Does the image leave my device?

Tracing happens in your browser. Sign-in and advanced-export authorization use the network, but the source image is not uploaded for tracing. Keep the connection available for required resources and save your output before closing the page.

Try one simple logo first. Approve the path shapes and background before using the SVG in a larger project.
