How to Merge PDF Files in Order and Check Every Page
Combine PDFs locally, extract only needed ranges, correct orientation and verify page counts before sharing the merged document.
Merging a cover, report and appendix is easy to start and surprisingly easy to get wrong. The files can be in the wrong order, an appendix can appear twice, or a landscape page can be rotated unexpectedly.
Use PDF merge to combine two or more files locally, and treat the downloaded document as something to review before sharing.
Prepare a simple page plan
| Input | Example page count | Expected position |
|---|---|---|
| Cover | 1 | Page 1 |
| Report | 8 | Pages 2–9 |
| Appendix | 3 | Pages 10–12 |
This illustrative plan should produce 12 pages. Write down the counts from your own files rather than assuming their filenames describe their contents.
Open each input first. An encrypted PDF must be unlocked before using this workflow. Check that every page you intend to include is actually visible in the source.
Merge files in the intended order
- Select at least two PDFs; no sign-in is needed.
- Review the thumbnails and page counts.
- Drag files into order, or use the up and down controls.
- Start the merge and download the result.
- Open the downloaded PDF and compare it with your page plan.
The merger combines all pages from the selected files. Moving a file changes where its whole group of pages appears; it is not an arbitrary page-by-page editor.
Free / Pro limits: images 10 / 20 MiB each, 50 / 100 MiB per task; PDFs 50 / 100 MiB and 100 / 200 pages; media 100 / 200 MiB; text, code and SVG 2 / 5 MiB; up to 10 / 50 inputs where supported. Workbench JSON: 2 / 32 MiB; other workbench operations: 1 MiB. Tool-specific safety limits still apply.
Extract only the pages you need
Use PDF split before merging when an appendix should include only selected ranges. Page numbering starts at 1. An input such as 1-3,5 creates separate outputs for the range and the single page, which you can arrange in the merger afterward.
Distinguish PDF page positions from printed page labels. A cover and contents page can make the visible label “1” appear several positions into the file. Select ranges by the file's page positions and verify the extracted result.
Correct sideways pages with PDF rotation. The selected angle is added to existing rotation, so inspect the result rather than assuming that every page needs the same quarter turn.
Add finishing marks for the right reason
PDF watermarking adds text or an image to selected pages. It changes appearance; it does not prevent copying or editing.
PDF signing places a drawn or imported signature image. It is a visual mark, not a certificate-based cryptographic signature. Do not treat the presence of a signature image as verification of document integrity.
Keep source documents when they have existing signatures or interactive features. Check those features in the final viewer instead of assuming that page copying preserves every document-level behavior.
Perform a final review
Check the first page, every file boundary and the final page. Confirm total pages, orientation, readable text and appendix order. If the receiving process requires bookmarks, forms or verified signatures, inspect those separately.
Local processing keeps the document bytes on your device, but the site still performs account and export authorization. Download the result before closing the page; it is not automatically stored as a cloud document.
Check searchability before combining scans
Merging pages does not add OCR. A scanned page remains an image unless a text layer is added by another workflow. If the packet needs text search, first review a sample in PDF OCR & Organization, then merge the exported copies in order.
The OCR and organization guide explains text corrections, duplicate flags and export choices. Keep the source documents when forms, links or signatures matter; rebuilding scanned or edited pages is not a promise to preserve those features.
Key takeaways
Plan the page order, extract unwanted ranges before combining, and review the actual download. Start with PDF merge when your inputs are ready.
