JSON Formatter and Validator: Read, Compare and Export Data Safely
Format or minify JSON, distinguish syntax from schema validation, inspect nested values and convert records to CSV without losing context.
An API response compressed into one line makes a missing field or wrong value hard to notice. A JSON formatter gives you readable indentation, but syntax, data shape and business correctness still need separate checks.
FormatOwl can format, minify or validate JSON in your browser without sign-up. It preserves numeric precision during formatting and leaves object key order unchanged.
Start with valid JSON
{"items":[{"id":"0017","name":"Notebook","quantity":2}],"active":true}Choose Format and set indentation to see the object and array boundaries. Use Minify when you need compact output, or Validate when you want a syntax check without treating a pretty layout as proof of correctness.
JSON uses quoted property names and does not allow trailing commas or ordinary JavaScript comments. These rules come from the JSON specification. A JavaScript object literal copied from code may need intentional editing before it is valid JSON.
Choose the next check by question
| Question | Tool | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Is the syntax valid? | Formatter / Validate | Does not check your application's rules |
| Where is a nested field? | Tree viewer | Displayed depth and entries are bounded |
| Which values match a path? | JSONPath query | Returns an array of matches |
| Did two responses change? | JSON diff | Ignores object key order, preserves array order |
| Does the shape match a schema? | Schema validator | Requires a self-contained schema |
With the example above, $.items[*].name selects the item names. Start with a simple path, confirm the result, and only then query a larger response. Querying, copying and exporting are free within input limits.
Keep identifiers and numeric precision in view
An identifier such as 0017 should remain a string if its leading zeros matter. A numeric value and a quoted string are different JSON types even if they look similar in a table.
The formatter, query and diff tools preserve large numeric values, but the schema validator uses JavaScript numbers for numeric checks. Values outside their precision may be rounded there. Do not assume every tool in a pipeline handles large numbers in exactly the same way.
Move records into a table or CSV
JSON table view expects an array of objects and builds columns from their keys. Missing values show as empty cells. The preview displays up to 200 rows; the full JSON result remains available.
Use JSON/CSV conversion for a CSV file, selecting comma, semicolon or tab delimiters. CSV-to-JSON values become strings. Review numeric and boolean fields before passing that result to a typed API.
JSON-to-CSV output protects cells that could be interpreted as spreadsheet formulas. This can change the literal cell representation, so inspect the export in the receiving spreadsheet rather than comparing only its appearance in a text editor.
Review changes before replacing a source
A JSON diff treats reordered arrays as changes because their order can matter. It compares documents; it does not merge them. If a diff is unexpectedly large, inspect array order and data types before assuming every line is a business change.
Keep private tokens and personal records out of shared examples. Local processing means the tool works on your device, while account and export checks still contact the service; see the local-processing guide.
Use the large-file path for multi-megabyte exports
The regular formatter keeps its own input limits. For a JSON file over 10 MB, the developer workbench preview offers file-based formatting and syntax validation up to 32 MiB with Pro access. Processing runs in a worker and the visible preview is limited to 16,000 characters; the complete result is available through its copy and download buttons.
Read the large JSON guide before opening a large export. That limit does not extend to JSONPath, CSV conversion or schema validation. Generating a Schema from a small sample is also different from validating a document against an existing contract.
Key takeaways
Format for readability, validate the intended constraints, preserve identifier types and inspect exported records in their destination. Begin with the JSON formatter and move to the tool that answers your next concrete question.
